You might have already read about Global warming.

In common usage, climate change describes global warming—the ongoing increase in global average temperature—and its effects on Earth’s climate system. Climate Change in a broader sense also includes previous long-term changes to Earth’s climate.

Global heating is technically more correct term than Climate Change or Global warming because we are talking about changes in the energy balance of the planet,” U.K scientist Richard Betts said at the UN climate summit in Katowice, Poland.

What is Global Heating ?

The Earth absorbs radiation from the Sun and emits some of it back into space. If the amount of energy emitted matches the amount it absorbs, the planet’s “ energy budget ” is in balance, and the surface temperature remains steady. If the incoming and outgoing energy are not balanced, the planet is either heating or cooling over time.

In simple words, Global Heating means that the amount of energy absorbed by Earth from Sun is more than the amount of energy emitted.

Global heating causes abnormal changes in natural Climate cycles of Earth that leads to destruction at multiples levels..

Harmful effects of Global Heating :

  1. Global temperatures rose about 1.8°F (1°C) from 1901 to 2020.
  2. Sea level rise has accelerated from 1.7 mm/year throughout most of the twentieth century to 3.2 mm/year since 1993. This is leading to floods in coastal areas.
  3. Glaciers of mountains are shrinking: average thickness of 30 well-studied glaciers has decreased more than 60 feet since 1980. Melting of Glaciers in Mountain ranges leading to landslides and cloud bursts.
  4. The area covered by sea ice in the Arctic at the end of summer has shrunk by about 40% since 1979..
  5. Snow is melting earlier compared to long-term averages.
  6. Heat waves in cities leading to deaths of people.
  7. Fresh Water crisis : Many rivers like Yamuna have turned into sewage filled with plastic and sulphate pollution. Ground water is polluted with lead, nitrates, pesticides and arsenic. Their are floods in certain areas and droughts in other areas. This water crises have resulted in lack of sanitation resources and water-borne diseases, food insecurity, conflict, financial instabilities, infrastructure damage and bio-diversity loss.
  8. Food Crisis : Abnormal changes in climate leads to heavy losses of crops for farmers leading to farmer suicides and selling the land.. Children of many farmers are abandoning their profession and big capitalists working in World Bank are taking over the agriculture sector. The branded grocery stores and sabzi mandi is selling some varieties of hybrid fruits and vegetables grown from G.M.O seeds sold by Bill Gates, Monsanto-Bayer, Mahyco, Nuziweedu etc which causes reproduction issues and leads to birth of deformed children.
  9. Earth-quakes cause damage to cement homes. In Joshimath, Uttarakhand hundreds of home were damaged by earthquakes.

Harish Lal’s family is among those from Uttarakhand’s Joshimath whose houses developed cracks on January 2-3, 2023.

Let us solve the harmful effects of Global Heating by practising Sustainable living :

Sustainable living describes a lifestyle that attempts to reduce the use of Earth’s natural resources by an individual or society. It is referred to as “zero wastage living” or “net zero living”. Its practitioners often attempt to reduce their ecological footprint (including their carbon footprint) by altering their home designs and methods of transportation, energy consumption and diet.  This term was coined by American citizens Helen and Scott Nearing marked the beginning of the modern day sustainable living movement.  This book is based on sustainable living.

Steps for protecting Mother earth from Global heating or Global warming –

  1. STOP Improper Waste Disposal :

The area and height of landfill sites and open drains/गंदा नाला  is increasing day by day. The reason is single-use plastics and improper waste disposal.

Purchase three dustbins in your home and office for segregating and dumping 3 types of waste –

a)  Dustbin for Plastic waste placed in kitchen –

The plastic waste should be sent to a company which recycles plastic.

If we try to stop use of plastic in unnecessary items like single-use mineral water bottles, toothbrush, toothpaste, detergent packaging, soap packaging, dishwasher packaging etc.  then less plastic will end up in landfills.

This is how we can Say ‘NO’ to use of single use plastic :

i) We should purchase our cleaning products like shampoo, soaps, dishwasher, detergent, bamboo toothbrush and toothpaste tablets from Arani eco company which packages and sells its products in biodegradable packing.

ii) Whenever we step out of home for office and vacation, we should keep a water bottle made from copper and not plastic. We should not purchase packaged drinking water from Bisleri.  This copper bottle can be purchased from Indian Art Villa, jaipur.

  b) Vegetable and fruit waste placed in kitchen –

The vegetable and fruit waste should not be dumped and given away to the garbage collector. The vegetable and fruit waste can be intelligently used in two ways :

i) Slurry for Bio-gas plant – The fruit and vegetable waste should be dumped in Bio-gas plants in homes which will generate bio-gas. This bio-gas can be used for cooking food in kitchen

ii) Compost pit in the garden for dumping vegetable and fruits which can be used as manure for plants – We should request a gardener or maali to create a pit in your home garden or community park. This pit should be covered by a sintex lid. The vegetable waste and fruit waste should be dumped in this pit every morning.

    c) Toilet dustbin waste placed in toilet –

Underground Septic Tanks for toilets at homes and offices should be created. In villages, their is no open drains. In villages, the toilets of all homes and offices are connected with underground septic tanks. But, in cities the toilets of homes and offices are connected with Open drain or गंदा नाला.

The toilet waste should be dumped in underground covered septic tanks in homes, offices and on landfill sites. The toilet waste of our should not be drained to गंदा नाला or open drain because in rainy season the open drain starts overflowing and it enters ground water. The level/height of the open drain is increasing day by day. The open drain or गंदा नाला should be disconnected from all our homes and offices and should be properly covered.

    2. Renewable electricity for our homes, offices, farms, hotels, Government offices using Solar panels :

We should stop using thermal electricity which is generated by burning coal in thermal power plants which causes air pollution. We should shut down nuclear fission reactors used for generating electricity.

3. Eco-friendly Transportation :

3. a) Retrofitting:  Convert Your Old Cars running on petrol and diesel and CNG Into Electric Vehicles by E-trio company of Hyderabad

What is retrofitting?

A distinctive technique to increase the age of old petrol and diesel vehicles, retrofitting involves changing the original Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and replacing it with a cleaner energy source. It replaces the combustion powertrain with an electric driveline and makes a car a zero-emission vehicle.

Where can I get my car retrofitted?

To reach India’s net-zero carbon emission goal by 2050, simply buying EVs will not be enough. Retrofitting can be the answer to global climate emergency needs.

Retrofitting a car could cost anywhere between Rs 2 to 4 lakh, but the price often depends on the model of the car. However, scientists at the University of Berkley say that retrofitting old cars may be cheaper than buying ICEs in no more than five years.

Tadpole Project is one of the first retrofitting companies in Delhi. “We hope to create more EVs in Delhi by not adding more cars to its roads,” their website reads. Incubated under IIT Delhi, the company has managed to convert vintage and modern cars into EVs.

Originally based in Hyderabad, E-trio, also a popular company in the sector, offers to convert old cars and fulfill the vision of affordable electric mobility. After removing the engine, engine suspensions, tailpipe, rear axle, and brakes, the company retrofits the car by assembling the gearbox, installing the electrical connection, assembling the battery pack, and testing the EV on rugged terrains.

3. b) Purchasing Electric Vehicles running on eco-friendly Sodium-ion battery manufactured by Volkswagen :

Using cars running on Petrol, diesel, CNG causes air pollution and cost per litre of Petrol, diesel and CNG is very expensive which nobody can afford. Their is no need to import oil from Gulf countries for transportation.

The lithium-ion batteries used in cars and inverters results in environmental hazards after they are dumped. These lithium-ion batteries damage the soil.

Eco-friendly and less expensive alternative for Transportation –

Sodium-ion battery is a replacement for lithium-ion batteries which is more sustainable, provides greater energy density, and is much cheaper too.

Volkswagen-backed Electric Vehicle maker rolls out first sodium-ion battery (sodium nickel chloride) powered electric car. AC Group’s Yiwei, a new EV brand in China backed by Volkswagen, debuted the first sodium-ion battery-powered electric car. The new JAC Yiwei EV rolled off the assembly line Wednesday. Yiwei is a new EV maker under the JAC Group. It was established earlier this year. Volkswagen owns 50% of JAC’s parent company; the other 50% is state-owned. Volkswagen invested 1 billion euros for a 50% stake in JAC Group in 2021. The German automaker also took full control of management of its existing EV joint venture with a 75% stake. The new EV features sodium-ion cylindrical cells from HiNa Battery. The Beijing-based tech company is affiliated with the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences :

We should use Electric cars, electric motorcycles, electric scooters, electric buses and electric trucks.   The batteries of Electric buses, electric cars, electric motorcycles and electric scooters, electric trucks should be charged with electricity generated by solar panels and not from electricity supplied from Thermal Power plants. Sodium-nickel chloride batteries should be used in Electric buses, electric cars, electric motorcycles and electric scooters and electric trucks.

Metro trains should also run on electricity generated by Solar panels.

Indian railways should also run on electricity generated by Solar panels.

4. Protect cows by constructing Cow shelters (Private or Government funded)-

a) Organic farming is not possible without the help of cows. For organic pesticides, farmers need sour fermented cow milk (खट्टी लस्सी).

b) Cows should NOT be abandoned by dairy farmers on the roads of cities because of which they start eating garbage waste. Cows should not be slaughtered for eating beef !

c) According to research done by Doctor Biswaroop Roy Chowdhary, daily consumption of milk leads to many diseases. So, we should stop this habit of drinking milk everyday so that cows are not impregnated a thousand times.

More and more Cow shelters should be constructed for protecting abandoned cows which should have veterinary doctors for their treatment.
